Learning to Overcome a Dental Fear

Woman in Dental Chair Worried AnxiousDental fear afflicts more than 10 percent of Americans. This could become a serious problem for those that have a fear that is so severe that it causes them to avoid seeing the dentist all together. Everyone has different reasons for their phobia- it could have been a bad experience in the past, a fear of needles and/or pain or the distress of being within close proximity of people. Regardless of the reason, there are a few things that must be done to try to get necessary appointments completed.

•  Be vocal - If you are afraid of the dentist, it is necessary to talk about it and not just with family and friends, but with the dentist himself. When you make your fears known to the professional that will be providing eventual treatment, he can make the necessary modifications to make you feel comfortable during procedures, even if it just a routine cleaning.
•  Choose the right time - Everyone leads a busy life, but scheduling your dental appointment during a time that you are already rushed or feeling stressed can increase your anxiety levels. Instead, choose a time that you are most likely to be a little more relaxed and able to talk yourself throughout the process.
•  Use relaxation techniques - There are numerous relaxation techniques that you can utilize in order to get through an appointment that causes anxiety. Try yoga or meditation before the appointment. You can also try listening to your favorite calming music during the appointment or wearing noise-canceling headphones to drown out the noise that causes anxiety.
