My Tooth Filling Fell Out – Now What?
|
Fillings are not meant to last forever. It might happen when you least expect it, but you can find that you are suddenly holding your filling in your hand. If the pain is immediate and unbearable, it could require an emergency call to the dentist. If the pain is not unbearable, you will still need to see the dentist, it just does not need to be done on an emergency basis.
Restoring the Tooth
At your dental appointment, it will be necessary to determine how to restore your tooth. The best outcome would be to place another filling in the tooth and let you go on with your day. Today this can be done with a standard, amalgam filling or a porcelain filling, which would resemble your tooth color. Unfortunately, not all cases allow for the tooth to simply be filled again. In these cases, it might be necessary to crown the tooth to make it stronger and allow it to have full function. In very severe cases, a root canal is necessary. This only occurs when the root of the tooth is affected either by decay or infection. The root canal gives us the opportunity to clean out the interior of your tooth and then crown it to give you the functionality that you desire out of your tooth.
The most important thing to remember is to make a dental appointment right away if your filling suddenly falls out. Even if you do not have pain, leaving the filling out can cause severe issues in the future and put you at risk for tooth loss. |
